The range of distiller Heiko Hoos has been a rather experimental one from the start.
Botanicals like Lapsang Souchong (smoked tea) also found it's way into Teufelsgeist.
Contrary to spirits like Rum and Whiskey, which are the direct alcohol product of fermented and distilled grain, Gin is a 'spirit' or eau de vie, a 'Geist'.
The taste giving ingredients, the botanicals, are macerated in high volume, neutral grain alcohol and distilled again. This distilled essence is then fine tuned with water for it's bottling strength.
This means that 'orange' doesn't resemble 'lemonade' here. Instead, it's adding a dense, oily sweetness. Fennel doesn't go down the fennel tea route but delivers a kind of freshness to the taste. Pepper adds it's fruity aroma instead of just being spicy, while mint has a quite 'green' flavour without going the bubblegum direction.
Overall, Teufelsgeist is quite complex. Especially in the neat sip there's a clear layering of the different flavour stages.
A quite fresh and fruity start, with the freshness leaning into mint and growing spicier. This leads into the more aromatic notes of pepper and cinnamon flower. The second half holds the more earthy notes of cardamom and angelica root.
Lavender adds a short and floral twist before the long staying finish in which the juniper and smoky notes of Lapsang show.
Teufelsgeist is fine tuned for classic Indian Tonic, which let's the layering do it's purpose. Mediterranean Tonic puts the focus on the fruity sweetness, while Dry goes for the earthy notes and juniper.
Those who wanna try out the Signature Drinks for each song should keep an eye on the @teufelsgeistgin Instagram page. We'll be posting them there, as well as some other ideas.
However - for those who want to experience the more physical side of the Teufelsgeist album, we recommend a classic of the band history. A bottle of Gordon's Gin combined with 1,5l Schweppes Indian Tonic. This will make the journey from the euphoric first pour during 'Offerschaal der astrologische mengvormen' until ending up in the 'Godverlaten Leprosium' quite tangible.
ÜBER DEN GIN:
Das Sortiment von Destillateur Heiko Hoos ist seit jeher experimenteller angelegt.
So finden sich Zutaten wie Lapsang Souchong (Rauchtee) auch in Teufelsgeist wieder.
Entgegen Bränden und Produkten wie Rum und Whiskey, die 'direkter Alkohol' sind und durch Fermentation, Vergärung und Destillation gewonnen werden, ist Gin ein 'Geist'
Hier werden die Aromengeber, Botanicals, in fast reinem Neutralalkohol mazeriert und dann erneut destilliert. Diese Essenz aus Ölen und Aromen wird dann auf Trinkstärke eingestellt.
Daher bedeutet 'Orange' hier nicht 'Limonade' - stattdessen liefert sie eher eine ölig schwere Süße. Fenchel sorgt für Frische ungleich von beispielsweise Fencheltee. Pfeffer fügt sein aromatisches Prickeln statt nur Schärfe hinzu, während Minze sehr 'grün' und ohne Kaugumminoten daherkommt.
Insgesamt ist Teufelsgeist recht klar strukturiert und durchläuft gerade pur verschiedene geschmackliche Phasen.
Ein süßer, fruchtiger Start, der in frische Aromen übergeht. Die schärfer werdende Minze führt zu den pikanteren Noten von Pfeffer und Zimtblüte. Die zweite Hälfte bilden dann die erdigeren Noten wie Kardamom und Angelikawurzel.
Lavendel bringt einen kurzen, floralen Twist bevor im Abgang der rauchige Lapsang und Wacholder lange anhalten.
Abgestimmt ist Teufelsgeist auf klassisches Indian Tonic und funktioniert damit vielschichtig und klar. Mediterranes Tonic lenkt den Fokus auf Frucht und Süße, Dry auf die herberen Noten und Wacholder.
Wer sich an den für jeden Song erstellten Signature Drinks und anderen Rezepten versuchen will, sollte die @teufelsgeistgin Instagram Page im Auge behalten. Dort werden wir nach und nach einige Ideen posten.
Für jene, die innerhalb eines Durchlaufes von 'Teufelsgeist' eher das physische Konzept anstelle des spirituellen erleben möchten, empfehlen wir dennoch lieber den Klassiker der Bandgeschichte: eine Flasche Gordon's Gin kombiniert mit 1,5l Schweppes Indian Tonic. Damit wird die Reise vom euphorischen Einschenken während 'Offerschaal der astrologische mengvormen' bis hin in's 'Godverlaten Leprosium' greifbar.
